9 Best Movies For Step Families

In movies, stepparents consistently get a bad rap. When it comes to portrayals of step families, families where one or both of the adult partners bring children from a previous relationship into the family, most mainstream movies perpetuate old and tired stereotypes: Stepmom is unstable, if not downright evil, and stepdad is a lecherous psychotic. Movies with positive images of stepparents and their children are hard to find, even in our culture where blended families are very common. Below are nine films with positive portrayals of step family life appropriate for a variety of age groups for your consideration.

Hi,

I'm 48 years old and a year ago I remarried. I have two kids and my husband has six kids--together we have 8. Six of those 8 kids are living at home with us (we both have full custody). Our kids ages are: 13, 14, 16, 17, 19, 20, 22, 23. Pretty scary, right? Needless to say, this year has been HARD! It is getting a little better, but I would love to have some support and advise.
What say ye?

Hi Sally, your circumstance does sound scary indeed and, I would say, requires a most extraordinary, very mature and courageous couple to have a chance at working.

I am more than happy to be a sounding board for you and to make suggestions where you might feel stuck. Whether I can be of real help to you, or not, only time will tell. Please feel free to use this blog as a platform for your thoughts, questions and debriefing. You may even find that other stepmums out there in Cyberland will identify and enter into the conversation.

I hope that you had a happy Christmas.

Kind regards,
Sonja

Thanks for this list! There are so many negative depictions of stepmothers in movies that it makes the positive ones hard to find. The same goes for books, which is why I decided to write a children's book where the stepmother is the hero! It's called My Fairy Stepmother, and it's the first fairytale with a good stepmom! You can find it on Amazon or at MyFairyStepmother.com.

kids!?! 19, 20, 22,23? aren't they in college? or at least planning to move out? or working? either way I'm sure they're doing their own laundry and cooking if they have to live with their parents!
